I talked with someone more knowledgeable than me about Jaguar Doom and he said Dark Arena's engine isn't directly based on Jaguar Doom but rather was built to have similar features, ala Mars 3D. This would explain the Doom stuff that is there (palette, sprite format, jaguar texture format).
I wasn't clear, sorry. He meant the same between PC and Jaguar Doom. If it was also the same in Dark Arena the building in the screenshot would have looked correct, which it didn't.
EDIT: Hopefully a screenshot of the conversation will prevent any further confusion.

I thought so. From my research DA and its descendant games also use Doom's sprite format, so that's another point in favor.
sorry i'm not in the habit of actually clicking "reply" and ensuring people actually get notifications
EDIT: Quasar got back to me. His response is "Sky visplane behavior is the same as far as I know."

There's the fact that the level designers attempted rendering tricks that would have worked in Doom but didn't in DA, but I suppose that could just be one feature the PC engine has that the Jaguar one doesn't. I'll try asking Quasar.
I thought Dark Arena was a derivative of the Jaguar Doom engine. Do you have a source for DA not being an idTech1 title?
I know that, at the very least, the palette used for DA's enemy sprites and level textures is Doom-derivative, and the texture format is roughly the same as Jaguar Doom's.

Fun fact: Some lists of Doom engine games will mistakenly include this because it used Dark Arena's engine, which is more understandably (but still incorrectly) believed to be based on the Doom engine.
